Friend Love

Here at Sweet Tea, Science we are big believers in the importance of platonic relationships to one’s general quality of life. Our culture tends to give supremacy to romantic partnerships, which is a bummer as it undercuts the intimacy and importance of friendship. We think meaningful friendships are extra important during the graduate school journey. It’s a long haul, and it’s important to have a network of support you can rely on to pep you up, cheer you on, and help you problem solve.

2018 Reflections, Resolutions, and Round-Up

Wheee 2019.  2018 has been a good year for this blog!  Over the summer, Meridith took the initiative and got us posting again.  And we are so glad we did!  This year, we shared a lot of ourselves with you all.  Thank you for visiting with us and this space, and allowing us to share our experiences with you.

We are kicking off 2019 like we do each year, with our college besties!  This year, we are celebrating in Savannah, GA listening to Rachel nerd out about all the marshes near our AirBnB.  Starting off the year with one another always serves to recharge our batteries for work and our other creative projects, like Sweet Tea, Science.  We have big plans for 2019!  We can’t wait to take you all along with us on this ride!

Last week Sweet Tea, Science was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award by the fabulous Science Femina!

Tess, the woman behind The Science Femina, is a California native working and pursuing a graduate degree in Chemistry at California State University, Fresno. Her experiences partnering with countless outreach organizations to promote diversity in STEM translate nicely to super helpful blog posts. We love that she is writing about her experiences in order to guide and motivate future generations. Some of our favorite posts include: From JC to UC to MS Degree and You Can’t Do It All And 4 Things I’m Doing Instead. Also be sure to check her out on Twitter and Instagram.

The Science Femina asked us the following questions: img_2392

How did you come up with the title of your blog?

We wanted a name to tie together our southern roots and our love for all things science. We both grew up in the woods of Kentucky and met in undergrad at Western Kentucky University. Also alliteration is something we highly value. We used to have separate blogs (Always a Scientist and Practical Ecologist) but we found working together on a single project was more enjoyable because it gave us an excuse to spend more time together and explore what we could create as a team!
